1. Saglemi contractor was paid $179m for $64m work – Attorney-General 

Documents filed in court on behalf of the Attorney-General alleges that the contractor who executed the Saglemi project has been paid $179m despite executing work worth $64m. Out of 2,172 acres of land released to the contractor, he is said to have developed just 651.75 acres. 

2. Free SHS: Uncompleted structures converted to classrooms at Prempeh College School 

authorities at Prempeh College in the Ashanti region have been compelled to convert an abandoned school structure into classrooms to accommodate students. Some rooms in the three-storey structure are serving 10 classes despite the risk posed. 

3. Accra-Tema motorway to experience 21-day disruption to traffic flow beginning Aug 1 

The Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) has announced that motorists using the Accra-Tema motorway will, from Sunday, August 1 to August 22, experience disruption to traffic flow. In a press statement signed by the Acting Chief Executive of GHA, A.B.K. Nuhu explained that the 21-day disruption is to allow repair works to be undertaken on the damaged beam of the Ashaiman overpass bridge. 

4. Tokyo 2020: Samuel Takyi secures Ghana’s first Olympic medal in 29 years 

Boxer Samuel Takyi has won Ghana’s first Olympic medal since the men’s football team won bronze at the 1992 Games in Barcelona. Takyi won his featherweight quarter-final 3-2 on points over Colombia’s Ceiber David Segura to guarantee himself at least a bronze medal in Tokyo. 

5. We’re initiators of ¢100 National Cathedral donation campaign, not government – Secretariat 

The National Cathedral Secretariat has reiterated that the mobilisation of funds towards the construction of the National Cathedral is not a part of government’s programme. The Secretariat says the facility is only supported by government as it spearheads its own fundraising activities under the leadership of the Board of Trustees. 

6. UTAG declares nationwide strike beginning Monday, August 2 

The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), has directed members to withdraw all teaching and related activities on campus beginning Monday, August 2, this year. Members of the association are to lay down their tools and stay off teaching, examinations and invigilation, marking of examination scripts and processing of results until further notice. 

7. 14 Madina market traders acquitted, discharged of contempt charges 

The Adenta High Court presided over by justice Fred Kwasi Awuah has acquitted and discharged 14 traders of contempt charges. The charge was brought against them in Republic vs Aboloway, Naa, Carpet Boys, Gifty, Daniel, Kasimu, Solo, Last Hour, Akpala, Yayar, Eazi, Opro, Abena Bankye, Akua (Tomatoes). 

8. Take time off your schedules for a vacation – Palmer-Buckle tells academics 

The Metropolitan Archbishop of Cape Coast, the Most Rev. Charles Gabriel Palmer-Buckle is asking Ghanaian academics and workers to learn to take time off their schedules and take a vacation. He said it makes no sense to acquire all the academic degrees and all the properties in the world only to spend them on hospital bills and not enjoying the fruits of their labour. 

9. Corrupt heads of public institutions should not go scotfree – Haruna Iddrissu 

to Special Prosecutor Leader of the National Democratic Congress’ Caucus in Parliament, Haruna Iddrisu, has urged the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, to pay particular attention to corrupt heads of public institutions just as much as he does political officeholders. According to him, whereas political office holders have faced the brunt of corruption probes and prosecutions, heads of public institutions have gone largely unscathed. 

10. Noguchi Memorial Institutes appoints first female director, Prof Dorothy Yeboah-Manu 

Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research has appointed Professor Dorothy Yeboah-Manu as its new Director of the institution. She holds the honour of being the first female director of the institution, as she takes office from Professor Abraham Kwabena Anang who retired on July 31, 2021.
